WSBK, the Nurburgring GP
Max Biaggi minds solidifying his lead and brings home precious points for the World Championship. He is fourth in Race 1 and fifth in Race 2. two rounds from the end of the season his points advantage remains practically unchanged. Aprilia still first in manufacturer rankings.
At the end of a bright and dark weekend, in any case brightened by yesterday's fantastic, track record setting Superpole, Max Biaggi comes home from the Nurburgring solidly at the top of the world championship standings. The four time world champion now has a 58 point advantage over his closest pursuer, Brit Leon Haslam (Suzuki).
From a championship point of view, the German round came down to the two riders, and by now the only riders - even according to the maths - competing for the title: in the first race Biaggi rode his Aprilia RSV4 to fourth place leaving Haslam behind (sixth) and thus earning three points. In race 2 Haslam (third) made up five points on Max.
In race 1, which Rea (Honda) won, Max had some trouble at the start and then mounted a fantastic comeback which brought him to fourth place. In race 2 Max stayed among the front riders the entire way and, in spite of his fifth place finish, just barely missed a spot on the podium.
To summarise, these were two strong races which solidify both Max Biaggi's top spot in the rider rankings (Biaggi 397, Haslam 339) and Aprilia's lead in the manufacturer standings (Aprilia 409, Suzuki 360, Ducati 342). The final result: the 60 point advantage Max had at the beginning of the weekend turned into 58 and this will be the advantage as we go into the last two rounds which will decide this fascinating World Superbike 2010 season.
"A shame - confesses Max Biaggi at the end of race 2 - We battled all weekend with grip and chattering problems. I know that I can be decisively faster. In fact, in Superpole with the soft tyre we were making excellent times. But the important thing is to know how to deal with the difficulties. We took home some important points from a championship point of view and now there are just two more rounds and we're out front. The finish line is close, but we cannot make the mistake of underestimating our rivals who, even today, showed their determination to exploit every false move we make"
The Aprilia Alitalia Racing Team is back on the track for the first day of practice at the German Nurburgring circuit.
A good début for ranking leader Max Biaggi (first in the free practice round and sixth in qualifying practice) while team mate Leon Camier suffered a bad fall, fracturing his wrist.
World Superbike returns after the summer break on the Nurburgring track where Max Biaggi and the Aprilia Alitalia Racing Team make no bones about their desire to solidify the respective leaderships out front of the riders for the four time world champion and the manufacturers for the Team.
The first day of practice is halfway happy for the red, white and green team: a decisive beginning for the Roman champion counter-balances the unfortunate crash of his team mate, Leon Camier. The Brit had a slide during the first timed session, suffering trauma to his knee and – worst of all – a fractured scaphoid, the wrist bone. At the moment his condition is being evaluated by the Mobile Clinic: the possibility that surgery may be needed is clear. Obviously this puts Camier at risk for the last part of the season.
In the morning free practice session Aprilia colours bearer Max Biaggi literally rocketed out with a time of 1'56.571. The timed session in the afternoon, on the other hand, ended with a sixth time for Max at 1'56.077, while Leon came in sixteenth before his fall.
Max Biaggi commented: "We're having a bit of difficulty transferring power to the ground. We're suffering particularly from vibrations. I'd say it's nothing very surprising, but tomorrow we need to improve. We need to find the best possible setup. Today I also tried changing out bikes to evaluate the best different solutions and test the effects. Pirelli has provided a new tyre for everyone, but I didn't use it very much. Apparently we'll see an improvement with it, but I'll have to test it more thoroughly tomorrow. In short, this was a busy Friday. Now we need to put all of this information together and make the choices which will let us close in on the leaders."World Superbike returns.
The Aprilia Alitalia racing Team is back on the track at the historic German Nurburgring circuit with a double world leadership to defend.
After the customary summer break, the time has come for the Aprilia Alitalia Racing Team to return to the track for the German round, the eleventh in this year's World Superbike. With two leaderships to defend - both in the rider class with Max Biaggi and in the manufacturer class - and with three rounds left to race, an adrenaline filled season finale is in store for the red, white and green team.
The 2010 WSBK championship has held great satisfaction as well as high expectations for the Aprilia Alitalia team up to this point.
The team from Veneto has taken 9 wins, all achieved by four time World Champion Max Biaggi, and another 7 podiums, 3 of which are credited to Brit Leon Camier.
These extraordinary results - remember that the RSV4 is only in its second year of racing - translate into 373 points for Max Biaggi, 60 more than the second place holder, Leon Haslam on his Suzuki, while Aprilia is at the top of the manufacturer rankings with 385 points against Suzuki's 334 and Ducati's 297.
"I can't wait to get back on the track! - confirms ranking leader Max Biaggi - The holidays are important and pleasant, of course, but the call of the race is always irresistible. We'll be on the Nurburgring, a nice track, I'd say less disagreeable to our RSV4 than Silverstone, and the last leg of the season, the decisive leg, awaits us. Obviously I'm happy with what I've done so far, but you only count up the points at the end, so don't talk to me about strange strategies or point calculations. We have two first places to defend and that is not a simple thing: you've seen how easy it is to lose points. Our opponents are ready to take advantage of every false move we make. There are still six races and that's 150 points up for grabs, so mathematically anything is still possible. For the entire team this is the time to find maximum concentration again. Each race from here on out can be decisive."
As of yesterday Aprilia is the Italian and European brand with the most victories in World Moto GP history.
With the success of Spanish rider Nico Terol in the 125 class at the Czech Republic GP round on the Brno track, Aprilia reaches a new record of victories in World Moto GP.
With today's victory the manufacturer from Noale rises to 276 victories, one more than MV Agusta, and is ranked as the Italian and European brand with the most all time wins. In particular Aprilia has won: 133 races in 125 and 143 in 250, winning 36 World Championships: 18 riders (9 in 125 and 9 in 250) and 18 manufacturer championships (9 in 125 and 9 in 250).
Aprilia made its début in the 250 class moto GP in 1985 (first victory with Loris Reggiani in 1987) and in the 125 class in 1988 (first victory with Alex Gramigni in 1991). The first championship wreath in the 125 class was won by Gramigni in 1992 while the first 250 title came with Max Biaggi in 1994.
Many of today's greatest motorcycle champions have made their début, raced and won with Aprilia: from Max Biaggi to Loris Capirossi, from Valentino Rossi to Casey Stoner to Jorge Lorenzo, Marco Melandri and Marco Simoncelli.
Aprilia Racing boasts an overall winning record of 43 championship titles which are added to the 36 World Moto GP titles and the 7 wreaths in the off road disciplines. Today Aprilia is also involved in World Superbike with the RSV4 bike, which Max Biaggi has already ridden to nine victories in this 2010 season, leading both the rider championship rankings and the manufacturer standings. Aprilia is also involved in the World Rally with the RXV 4.5 two cylinder which, after having made its début with a fantastic third place in the Dakar, dominated the recent Tunisia Rally.
WSBK, the Silverstone GP
On the brand new Silverstone track, Max Biaggi, undisputed leader in the rankings, wants to celebrate is 100th WSBK race properly. Leon Camier is playing on home turf and aims for a top result.
In a land soaked with motorcycling passion like Great Britain, Aprilia Alitalia Racing Team has every intention of arriving with a three-coloured "wave". With two leaderships to defend on a track which is new to everyone, the team from Veneto can count on the enormous motivation which both colours-bearers have.
The "Corsair", Max Biaggi, is playing the part of a cannibal this season, strengthening a well deserved first place in the rider rankings with victory after victory. The Silverstone round holds a particular taste for him also. His participation in Race 1 will take Max to 100 starting lines in World Superbike. Celebration from the top step of the podium would be the perfect crowning of an exceptional career.
Leon Camier arrives at Silverstone with just as much motivation. The English rider is determined to achieve the best results after to unfortunate races. The reigning British Superbike champion is quickly learning how to work on his RSV4 and the home atmosphere could speed up the apprenticeship.
"To arrive at this stage of the season with a 68 point advantage over the nearest competitor is an astonishing result – declares Max Biaggi – especially considering the fact that we are in our second year in the Championship with a completely new bike. Now that we are out front, we don't want to let the opportunity slip through our fingers. We are earning every single result, considering the great work the Team and I are doing. Silverstone is a track which is new to everyone. I think that right from the first practice laps we'll be able to get a fairly good idea of the quality on the pitch. Our biggest worry are the bumps since the RSV4 doesn't seem to digest them too well, but we also know how to operate. The races at Misano and the second race at Brno showed that our work pays of and the little problems are certainly not insurmountable obstacles. My goal is to be on top 4."
Leon Camier is looking for a perfect weekend: “I'm really looking forward to this race, hopefully we can have a smooth weekend and we can find a rythem fast and not make any mistake! If everthing goes smoothly and we have no problems, we are capable of a good result. It’s going to be a hard weekend as there are 7 brits trying to prove a point and a couple of wild cards that are going to be very fast.
The new track is unknown to everyone so we are all on a level playing field, hopefully the bumps won't hinder the Aprilia too much and we get a good start, but I'm expecting a tougher weekend than ever!”
